It does seem intuitive to stretch what feels tight, and yet so many times this is not the most effective approach. WHY?
The answer lies in this fact: Our bodies are not built like buildings with a solid foundation below and symmetrical blocks on top. Have you ever taken a good look at your feet? These ultra-mobile, funny looking structures are not a typical foundation. In fact, your body is a miraculous tensegrity unit. Just as the word implies, your body requires “tension integrity” for optimal function. Your bones would be lying in a pile if you did not have your ligaments, tendons, and muscles pulling in a stable and balanced fashion upon your skeleton.
Take a look at the tensegrity model of the body to the right. You can appreciate that any one flexible segment between the sticks could be pulled shortened and tight OR could be resultantly lengthened and tight due muscle imbalance or skeletal asymmetry.
Thus, not everything that feels tight should be stretch - - it may already be locked long - - stretching will not help this situation.
This common problem occurs when, because of injury, repetitive strain, misuse and abuse, our bodies are simply no longer symmetrical, balanced, and stable.
