Think back before you started treating your headaches and migraines. If you had 15 or more headache days a month in any 3-month period, you could have Chronic Migraine.

Tips For Tracking Your Headaches and Migraines

  • Do it for one month. Give your doctor a full 30-day picture of your headaches, and how they affect you.
  • Record every day that you’re headache and migraine free. Your doctor needs to know how many days a month you’re free from headache.
  • Track them as they happen. It’s easiest to remember how a headache felt and how it affected you if you record it right away.
  • Note their impact on your life. Specify if your headaches affect you at work, doing everyday things, and your relationships with family and friends.
  • List any medicines you took. Whether it is prescription, over-the-counter, or an herbal treatment, your doctor needs to know what you are taking.

Take on Chronic Migraine with BOTOX®

BOTOX has been a useful tool in medicine for over 30 years. While it is an established medicine, there is also growing potential into a number of different applications.

BOTOX is a purified form of botulinum toxin (onobotulinum toxin A) that works by adhering to receptors on nerves that contribute to muscle firing. So, the BOTOX can block some, or all muscle firing with effects lasting around 3 months. BOTOX can also contribute to pain relief by mechanisms beyond the relaxation of the muscles and research has continued in hopes of further understanding these effects.

Many people are familiar with BOTOX injections for cosmetic uses. Interestingly, during the cosmetic trials, researchers found that many of the participants had a significant reduction in their migraine symptoms. Further studies were pursued and Botox was later approved for use in migraine headaches along with other painful conditions including spasticity and cervical dystonia.

BOTOX is indicated for patients who have ≥ 15 days per month with headache lasting 4 hours a day or longer. The injections are quick and relatively painless with repeated injections every three months. These patients typically note a reduction in headache frequency and severity. Like all medications, there is a risk of side effects with BOTOX. These may include muscle weakness that can contribute to eyelid droop or the feeling of neck instability. These symptoms are generally mild and transient.
